Welcome Silenus Winery

It is with great pleasure and pride that we include

Silenus Winery

in our exclusive portfolio.

In 1968 a walnut orchard in the Southwestern corner of Napa Valley, in the Oak Knoll District, was converted to Cabernet Sauvignon vineyards and the roots of Silenus Winery were firmly established.

Through the 1970’s the grapes from this vineyard were sold to Robert Mondavi, Inglenook and Clos du Val and consistently ended up their reserve wines. Realizing what gold this 20-acre vineyard produced, the owners built their own winery and began producing their own award winning wines that continue to this day. The winery was the 35th winery established post-prohibition in the Napa Valley. Now the valley is home to upwards of 450 wineries!

Silenus Winery has continued a tradition of handcrafted, small-production premium winemaking to this day, adding to the winery over the years with state-of-the-art production equipment, a 2,000 barrel aging chai and a gleaming, modern tasting room.

As of the middle of 2010, Silenus Winery was the first Napa winery to be acquired by a Chinese-American company, the Silenus International Group, Inc. The winery is simultaneously working to create a winery in mainland China and plans to sell those wines, along with premium Silenus Wines, throughout China.

Silenus Winery prides itself on a long history of premium grape growing and award winning wine production. In our Tasting Room guests are able to enjoy views of our Oak Knoll vineyards, the winery and barrel chai, and relax in our garden grotto and enjoy a glass of wine during a game of Bocce Ball – a perfect day in the Napa Valley.

Scott Meadows, General Manager    |      Bradley Smith, Winemaker

In 1968 the perfect spot to grow Cabernet Sauvignon was located in the Southwest corner of the Napa Valley right along Dry Creek. This area is now designated the Oak Knoll AVA (American Viticultural Area), and is one of the most diverse growing regions in the Napa Valley. It has a perfect convergence of growing conditions, the mildest climate in the Napa Valley, alluvial fan soils that provide the right balance of nutrients and stress, and the longest growing season, about 8 months, that results in full and complex flavor development in the grapes.

The land was home to a walnut orchard but had all the right characteristics to make world-class wines. The orchard was purchased, the walnut trees torn out, and vines were planted on St. George rootstock. As the vines grew and gained strength and maturity, a portion of the grapes were sold to Robert Mondavi Winery, Clos du Val Winery, and Inglenook Winery from 1970 through 2002 and consistently ended up in their reserve wines.

In 1995, the vineyards began to show the effects of phyloxera, a microscopic aphid that lives on and eats the roots of grape vines, and needed to be replanted on different, phyloxera-resistant rootstock. Robert Mondavi so loved the grapes from this vineyard that, at his expense, he offered his crew to assess the vineyard and help establish a replanting plan that would include the most appropriate rootstocks for the soils and the best Cabernet Sauvignon clones for the wine.

In 1997, the first sections of the vineyard were replanted on 101-14 rootstock for Cabernet Sauvignon clone 337 and 15 and 1103P rootstock for clone 8. The following year the remaining sections were replanted on 3309 rootstock for clones 15, 4 and 337. These vineyards are still vigorous and are consistently producing the highest quality grapes year in and year out.

The Silenus brand is the best selection from the estate vineyards as well as some outside sourcing of superior quality fruit. The favored varietals currently are Riesling, Chardonnay, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon.

A second label, Danais, features Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. The name is derived from Danais Tytia, an African/Asian Monarch Butterfly.

Who Was Silenus

Silenus Winery is named in honor of Silenus, the mentor and companion of Dionysus, the Greek god of wine. Silenus raised Dionysus from a child and taught him to focus on the most important things needed for a full life of hedonism and pleasure!

Key among the teachings was the art of planting and caring for grape vines in order to make the best wine possible. During ancient times wines were often flavored and sweetened with honey and so Silenus taught Dionysus how to raise bees to make the sweetest and most flavorful honey possible.

Silenus and Dionysus traveled the lands far and wide and hosted parties. While traveling they always carried with them their Thyrsus, a staff of giant fennel topped with a pine cone.

The Silenus Winery Thyrsus label pays homage to Silenus and combines all the elements that were taught to Dionysus, a Thyrsus emerging from a newly planted grape vine that is encircled by bees.SThyrsus1

There are many legends and myths’ describing the epic travels and parties of Silenus and Dionysus. One of the most famous features a giant eagle sent by Zeus to search for and return the drunk and wandering duo. Their presence was required to officiate at the right hand of Zeus over the gods’ annual wine festival.

It’s Been a Very Good Year!

Thanks to all our Suppliers and all our Retail Accounts in North Bay for your continued support and trust in Luxury Liquid Assets. We’ve watched some of our brands including Lobo Wines, grow into their own and catch on with increased placements in the restaurant sector as well as expanding the presence of Great Domain and Estates brands in the independent grocery segment.

We have been very fortunate to add Elan Jayme, to our sales team in September. Elan has experience and established accounts and relationships throughout the Bay Area.

Whole Foods has recognized the quality and value of our small craft brands and has put eleven skus to date on their lists in all 40+ Northern California stores.

One sad note, my good friend Bud Lawson, proprietor of Red Lava Vineyards, passed on to clear a new vineyard in the great beyond. He will be missed and remembered dearly. We wish his wife Kristi, all the strength and courage as she has vowed to carry on with the brand.

We look forward to another exciting year with perhaps the addition of a few new brands.  As always, with warmth and gratitude, Don Bodio

Handcrafted small production wines passionately created in the heart of the Napa Valley.

It is probably best said by Proprietors Bob Binder and Walter Jost…

Bob & Walter

Bob & Walter

“We love richly layered wines. Wines with the kind of depth and complexity that reflect the passion, the personalities and the perfectionism of the people who make them. We love velvety, seductively textured wines that reveal their secrets slowly, with finesse and style, taking you on a journey where every sip is a new experience along the way.

And after years of seeking out those wines, savoring them all over the world, and celebrating the pleasures they bring to life, our own journey brought us to one very special place—and one big idea.

The place is the Napa Valley. And the idea is simply this: create a small winery, hand-pick everything from the grapes to the people, and focus our passion on every step of the process, from the vine to the glass, to create the kind of extraordinarily layered wines we dream of.

We come from the world of luxury cruise lines, where we’ve had the good fortune to work with culinary luminaries like Jacques Pépin, a team of world-class chefs and sommeliers, and a host of outstanding epicurean partners like Bon Appétit and The Wine Spectator.

After years in that business, we know that when everyone behind the scenes is collaborating in happy harmony, the guests will be happy, too. In that spirit, we also know that when you work with great people who have fun making wine and love their work, the wine will give that love back with every sip.

If you’re wondering about our name, it, too, came from all those years at sea. The trident is a nod to Neptune, who used his three-pronged spear to create earthquakes, tidal waves, and oceans. In our own small way, we’re also excited about shaking things up a bit and creating something new.

And the silver part? That’s a reference to the way the sea looks on a calm, moonlit night. Placid, shimmering, inviting, and infinitely deep. Just like a great glass of wine.”

Leading the charge at the front of the winemaking campaign is Kari Auringer.

Kari put herself through enology school while working with some of California’s great winemakers. She’s been creating outstanding wines ever since, including working on the team to create many of Napa’s Cult Cabs such as the 100-point Scarecrow, Lindstrom, Hollywood and Vine and Keever.

Kari’s style is all about rolling up her sleeves and staying intimately involved with every step of the process, from vineyard sourcing and hands-on berry sorting to the myriad details of winemaking, sensory analysis and the infinitely nuanced art and science of blending.

Looking ahead, Kari’s excited about her Silver Trident voyage. “From the grapes themselves to the winemaking and blending, we’re looking for that juicy fruit-forward excitement that hits you right away, with layers of flavor and aroma that keep unfolding, leading to a long-lasting, unforgettable finish. What makes that work—and what makes a great wine age-worthy—is texture and mouthfeel. It’s always a journey filled with surprises and discoveries. That’s what makes it so exciting.”

Welcome Greg Linn Wines

We would like to welcome to our portfolio a producer of exquisite intensity and finesse . As an advocate for the virtues of Chardonnay & Pinot Noir, Greg Linn pays very close attention to every detail in the vineyard resulting in very few adjustments in the winery.

There have been nine vintages of site specific wines from Greg Linn-farmed vineyards, all employing organic practices. Grapes are harvested at low brix to preserve acidity and keep alcohols moderate. Whole cluster fermentation with all native cultures takes place in barrel and stainless. Wines are aged in mixed French cooperage for varying lengths of time specific to vineyard, vintage & wine characteristics.

In addition to his CA and OR wines, Greg makes 1er Cru White Burgundy and Grand Cru Champagne in Les Mesnil. Working closely with vineyard mangers and French wine making partners,  Selection Greg Linn produces wines from the noted Les Charms, Les Perrieres, Rougeots and Pourusot.
